Arab Heritage Learning / AHL is an introductory course that offers experience and knowledge in the arts, cultures and languages of the Arab world, with focus on Morocco. Participants will be introduced to the Arabic language through culturally immersed and context-based setting. In addition, AHL employs an interdisciplinary approach that draws on a wide range of fields, including art history, oral history, Islamic cultural studies, anthropology and sociolinguistics to explore the visual culture and literature, including stories, poems, proverbs, songs and celebrations that highlight everyday practices from an Arabian experience in Morocco. AHL attempts to create bridges between the past and the present, and between East and West. As part of the course, participants will explore and analyze a selection of art and artifacts from the Arab world, as well as stories in their historical context. They will also learn nasheeds from the Arab world and participate in preparing a Middle Eastern cuisine.
By teaching students about Arab heritage, the course ultimately aims to unpack Islamophobia and help students to become more alive to intercultural experiences and cultural diversity.
